"Conserving - Restoring"

Bild
Ladies and Gentlemen,
dear Friends,

"Conserving - Restoring", all of us interested in textile art works, will be confronted with this question in treating a highly esteemed and/or beloved textile.

Should the large hole, which really hurts the appearance of the rug, be closed by means of re-weaving? What to do when voracious moths have done their job on a textile? Can an object treated for its protection with biocides be decontaminated or what needs to be done to seriously lessen the effect of pesticides? Are there possibilities for the removal of dirt and encrusted matter on fibers without potentially permanent damage? What treatment is required to stop material related corrosion, like the change of the PH value in cotton fabric? Can a wet cleaning help or does washing in an aerosol establishment lead to the desired success?

We have questions upon questions looking for answers. In preparing for this conference it became evident, that a young generation of highly qualified textile restorers has the competence to answer these questions, because of their scientific knowledge to clarify these problems gained during their studies and the practical experience during their following professional career.

Last year the textile workshop of the Museum for Islamic Art had the fortune to move into new rooms in the Archäolgisches Zentrum der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Geschwister-Scholl-Str. 6 in Berlin-Mitte, and thus Anna Beselin invites us on the afternoon of Friday, October 25, 2013 to guided tours of the textile workshops in separate groups of maximally 20 persons, both in German and English.

Worldwide several important museums have been closed for years because of their treasures of Islamic art, or will not be accessible for a certain period for renovation of its galleries. The Museum für Islamische Kunst will now join the ranks of these museums and its reopening is planned for 2019.

Not only the Mshatta Façade will find a new space but the future presentation of the rug collection of the museum also requires new concepts. Large-scale challenges are in store for the museum.

Before the carpets will be taken to the depots for an unforeseeable duration, the participants of the Volkmann Treffen 2013 have a fine opportunity for study and contemplation, and it is a special delight that this year's meeting can once more be held in the Theodor-Wiegand-Saal of the Pergamonmuseum.

I cordially invite you to Berlin for the weekend of October 25. to 27, 2013.

With best regards

Christian Erber für Volkmann-Treffen 2013
