TENTS - From Symbol of Power to Cultural Heritage

Ladies and Gentlemen,
dear Friends,

The opening of the Türckische Cammer in March 2010 in Dresden gave us for the first time the possibility to walk into an Ottoman tent of the 17th century in a museum. Thus the view of the richly decorated interior becomes a special experience.

We are dealing with a three-mast tent, which reaches the height of 6 meters, resting on a ground basis 8 meters wide and 20 meters long. It is documented that this tent was brought from Poland in 1729 in preparation of a large camp staged by August the Strong near Zeithain, northwest of Dresden. In memory of the Ottoman tent camp of 1683 all around Vienna in the fight for the "Golden Apple" an enormous tent city was erected in the boundaries of Zeithain. Holger Schuckelt reports that the tent inventory of the time contained "finally 1051 tents of various kinds."

In preparation of the Volkmanntreffen 2013, which dealt with the restoration and/or preservation of textiles, we intended to also treat the preservation measures for the splendid Dresden tent. This had become necessary because the tent was given a central role in the newly fashioned "Türckische Cammer" in order to convey to the visitor not only the spacial impression but also that of the quality of the interior.

It fast became clear that a comprehensive presentation of that tent would be very difficult to place into the planned program and thus the idea of choosing "TENTS'" as the general topic for the Volkmanntreffen 2014 was born.

In Nurhan Atasoy's important presentation "Otağ-ı Hümayun - The Ottoman Imperial Tent Complex" the Ottoman tents kept in German collections are given considerable space. It is thus logical to treat these, often unknown, objects, to present the differing concepts of their museum presentation to the public and also not neglect historical connections.

I cordially invite you to Berlin for the weekend of October 24. to 26, 2014.

With best regards

Christian Erber für Volkmann-Treffen 2014
