Ladies and Gentlemen,
dear Friends,
„You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of
the
people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of
the time“. This quote, attributed to Abraham
Lincoln, could
serve as the motto for the Volkmann-Treffen 2012:
“Some let
themselves be deceived all the time, all some time, but all cannot be
deceived all the time.”
“Buyers, collectors, connoisseurs, forgers” is the
title of
a chapter in Kurt Erdmann’s book “Europe and the
Oriental
Carpet” and he reports about his experiences:
“Generally
connoisseurs and forgers are engaged in a constant struggle with each
other without meeting each other. The forger deals through
go-betweens and remains in the dark.” It is the aim
of this
year’s Volkmann Treffen to shed a little light on this
darkness.
The individual speakers will illustrate in their contributions this
theme and answer questions about original work, imitation, replica and
forgery. We will also deal with the revitalization of the art
of
rug weaving as well as the search for the use of correct base materials.
The application of the most modern scientific methods of investigation
helps to explain puzzling dates and questionable origins.
Color
definitions are as indispensable as radio carbon measurements, when
correct results are expected in individual cases.
Erdmann had probably heard of a “Herr Duduk or Toduk or
Tudok”. Today, nearly fifty years later, we know
that
Teodor Tuduc worked as a successful entrepreneur who developed a
sophisticated marketing system “based on ingenious
methods.”
Already as a young man Tuduc learnt the art of fundamental restoration
from the local rug dealers in his Transylvanian homeland.
Thus
arose also possibilities to acquire old pieces, damaged or not, to work
them and resell them. We can see parallels to the handling of
carpets in today’s Turkey.
„Half of the fun would go out of carpet collecting if there
were
no fakes or forgeries or at least no wrongly attributed
pieces,“
writes Erdmann in his report about the “unmasking”
of a
rug. The goal of the Volkmann Treffen 2012 is to support this
thesis of Kurt Erdmann.
I cordially invite you to Berlin for the weekend of October 26 to 28,
2012.
With best regards
Christian Erber für Volkmann-Treffen 2012
